Live for journalism
About the bravest Croatian journalist.
Jasna Babić, the heroine of Croatian journalism, began her journey as a journalist in early childhood. As the daughter of a unit, she loved to read. She devoured all literature, from fiction to professional articles. She was most impressed by the feuilletons, and she especially remembered the feuilleton written by the girl who babysat the Beatles. After reading that feature, she knew that she wanted to be a journalist.
Her first engagement was in "Polet". For the reportage series "Polet on the road" she won the first professional award. She wrote reports on the road, traveling from Jesenice to Gevgelija by hitchhiking, together with her boyfriend at the time, who was a photographer.
She established herself in the profession by writing for the newspaper "Danas". She followed the events related to the disintegration of the former state. After gaining independence, together with her colleagues, she founded the newspaper "Globus", where she worked as a war reporter. Dissatisfied with the editorial policy, together with Ivo Pukanić and Denis Kuljiš, she starts "Nacional". He begins to investigate political corruption, eavesdropping on the opposition, trade unions and journalists, and for the articles he writes, he wins the "Marija Jurić Zagorka" Award for investigative journalism.
After leaving "Nacional" she wrote for "Slobodna Dalmacija", "Jutarnji" and "Večernji list". Disagreeing with the editorial policies of most Croatian newspapers, she decided to write exclusively part-time.
Since then she has written for "Lupiga", "Express", "24express" and the portal "Oko". She also published two books on political corruption, "Zagreba Mafia" (2003) and "Urota Blaškić" (2005).
As a hobby, she has long researched the persecution of witches in Zagreb. Her great wish was to write a book on the subject. Unfortunately, the disease was faster.
Jasna Babić was remembered as one of the bravest and most important Croatian journalists.
