Stjepan was a world-renowned Esperantist who translated into that language, but also wrote poems in it. His poem "Unborn child" is the only contribution from Croatia published in the world anthology of Esperanto prose (1958).
He was also the president of the Varaždin Esperanto Society and the president of the Stenodactylographic Society Varaždin.

He is the author of a shorthand textbook based on the intersteno system. A lawyer by profession, he was an assistant to the District Public Prosecutor. He was also the president of the board of Matica Hrvatska in Varaždin, president of the national university and editor of Esperanto newspapers.

He also dealt with the Croatian language, and discovering the differences between the Croatian and Serbian literary languages, he found that: '...the differences consist of about 10,000 words, about 85 phonetic laws and over 200 word formation rules and a certain number of syntax, declension and conjugation... '

Today, the Esperanto society in Varaždin bears his name.
