Kuzma Žižak

Jul 7, 1911 - Nov 25, 1981(70)

always be considerate

Kuzma always thought only of his own well-being and took advantage of others, until the sea taught him a little more submission

Kuzma was a somewhat cunning man. The sea, poverty and the job of a lighthouse keeper taught him that. That morning his daughter also learned it. They got up early and went fishing as usual. The sea was calm and the catch was good, so they headed to the shore to sell the fish. On the shore, the villagers always eagerly welcomed the fishermen to have a fresh and delicious dinner or lunch that day. "Does Kuzma have fish?" one of them asked. "There is none. There is nothing." Kuzma lied. “Why are you lying dad? We caught a lot of fish." his daughter said to him in confusion. "Shut up, shut up. This is not a fish for the poor. We will sell her to the rich and get much more for her." Kuzma said slyly. That's how it was that time and many more times when he would come from fishing. Summer, autumn and spring meant plenty of fish and plenty of money for Kuzma. But winter came quickly that year, so Kuzma and his family had to save food and money. One evening, a particularly strong storm blew in and cut off their island from food supplies from the mainland. The smaller families who lived on the other side of the island barely had food for themselves, let alone supplies. Kuzma came to a difficult situation. The storm did not subside on the third day, and they disappeared without food halfway through the first day. He decided to light a fire so that the villagers on land would see that we needed help. The villagers got up from their houses without thinking. The ice bound all the boats in the village, so that they had to come to them with their oars to help them. They were six brave people, who fought with the waves and the wind that created the storm. Almost frozen, they finally arrived at the Babac lighthouse. Despite this, the villagers were happy to be able to help them with the abundance of food that they gathered together. Kuzma immediately built a fire that warmed them and constantly thanked them together with his children and wife. Part of the food was distributed to poor families on the island. Since then, Kuzma has always taken care of the food supply at the lighthouse, but also of not denying someone lunch even if he has no money at all.
