Saving Abel

She discarded her uniform, threw away the gun that Zvone had given her after being wounded, and took her child. It was supposed to look like she didn't put up a fight.

Viki defended Vukovar until the last day. When it was clear that the enemy forces had completely conquered the city, the only thing left for Vika was to help the wounded and try to stay alive herself.

Paragraph image 1866

She and her comrade Josip Abel were carrying a wounded man on a stretcher and trying to find help. In that task, Abel himself was wounded.

And two enemies were walking on the streets of Vukovar. Vika remembered how they walked like two generals, as if they had conquered the City by themselves. Abel wanted to kill them, but Viki knew that, wounded as they were, they would be finished if they revealed themselves to them.

She slipped past them and went to the shelter. - Let the first man who is in the basement come out! I have two wounded people up there, we have to get them to the hospital now! - she shouted.

A civilian joined her, got out and helped her carry Abel and the wounded man to the hospital. Then Viki went to Olajnica, to the shelter.

She discarded her uniform, threw away the gun that Zvone had given her after being wounded, and took her child. She wanted it to look like she didn't struggle. - I could no longer defend Vukovar, I could not defend the house... - said Viki. The only thing left for her is to stay alive. Because of the child.
