Vlatko Marković

Jan 1, 1937 - Sep 23, 2013(77)

Departure from Dinamo

Why did Marković leave Dinamo in 1966?

Vlatko Marković, the prominent president of the Croatian Football Association, had a great football career as a coach, but also as a player. He played for Dinamo for eight years, but in 1966, for reasons that remained unexplained for a long time, he had to leave that club. In his later years, he told his side of the story.

During the match between the Roman football club S.S. Lazio and Dinamo, riots broke out in the eighty-fifth minute of the game. One of the Lazio players slapped a Dinamo player. Marković reacted violently at that moment. He fired two shots at a Lazio player, the match was, of course, interrupted.

The then president of Dinamo, Ivan Šibl, tried to force Marković to apologize to the Italian players. Šibl insisted on this also for political reasons. Namely, then the then Italian Prime Minister Aldo Moro came to visit Yugoslavia.

Marković, in his typical style, replied to Šibl: - You will not watch that film - and because of that, on Šibl's initiative, he had to leave Dinamo.
