The brave heart of Rovinj
With one step he came among the angels...
Toni Godena was one of the young men to whom we owe our country's independence. Although as a conscript soldier he was not obliged to join the war units, out of love for the Motherland he joined the active composition of the Croatian Army during the aggression against the Republic of Croatia.
He acquired the status of Croatian Veteran of the Homeland War as a member of the VP 1033 military unit of the 33rd Engineer Brigade of the Croatian Army in Karlovac. He performed the duty of a soldier - a pioneer. He was praised for his expertise, dedication and responsibility. Out of love for his fellow citizens, he decided to participate in demining operations. He wanted to make his homeland safe for all future generations. He wanted a Croatia without mines, where it is possible to walk carefree in nature, without thinking about the suffering-stained past. He gave his life for such a Croatia and for the carelessness of all of us.
Tony's death was an accident. He died as a result of the explosion of a residual enemy infantry mine in Makušanski Lug, Sajevac settlement on July 22, 1996. He died during the demining of the Turanj-Karlovac terrain. By the decision of the President of the Republic, he was posthumously awarded the rank of Officer Deputy of the Croatian Army.
