Vinko Vošicki – printer from Koprivnica

Ideals that do not falter

Born in 1885 in Ledeč na Sazava in the Vltava area, Vinko studied bookkeeping in nearby Kolin and after he turned 18 he went to Koprivnica with Jaroslav Merhaut. Then in Koprivnica, Jaroslav opens a small bookstore and paper shop where Vošicki works for a certain time, after which in 1911 he takes full ownership of the place and prints the fashion magazine "Zoru" edited by Marija Kumičić, wife of the writer Kumičić. He also edited the magazines "Napred", "Illustrovani list" and "Zagrebački ilustrovani list". The father of Božena Loborec, the great writer from Koprivnica, Valko Loborec, writes about Vošicki that from the beginning he printed on a small press, but also that after a year he acquired a high-speed printing press. Vošicki considered printing to be an art, that's why in the morning it was not greeted with "good morning", but "Got di Kristi kunst" (God resurrect art). In Vošick's time, printing was an elite profession, therefore printing and graphic workers were closer to the elite than other workers. He was both a republican and a socialist who dared to print Krleža's Literary Republic and Cesarič's "Emperor's Kingdom". According to Vinko Vošicki, a book was also written by Marko Grgur, who in his novel deals with a real man within a dark literary drama in which there is no glimpse of a better future. With this atmosphere, Grgur described the turbulent first half of the 20th century in Koprivnica, and Vošicki - a man who bravely stood for his views and did not give up.
