Mara Strahinić

Jul 5, 1906 - Mar 23, 1993(87)

great danger for little reward

wartime is always full of uncertainty and fear and changes both a person and his priorities...

Mara's husband and son were in the partisans during the war. Their group also complained that they didn't have tobacco, and they couldn't get it anyway. Despite risking her life, Mara decided to surprise them. She loaded the casks that were normally meant for wine with tobacco, put everything on the cart and headed towards them. On the way to them, she had to pass the Ustashas, and that was the most difficult part. But, fortunately, Mara remained calm and with the help of her smile and good will managed to pass the people who were supposed to inspect what she was transporting. She delivered tobacco to her husband and son's group. She managed to see them and exchange a few precious words with them. And it lifted the spirits of the whole group because they unexpectedly got hold of the long-desired tobacco.
