Antun Grošić

An influential politician

From doctors to politicians.

Although he was born into a Croatian family, Grošić has always considered himself Italian. He is also known for his political activities. He was a supporter of the autonomists, and in 1914 he was captured in Vienna.

After the war, he returns to Rijeka, where Gabriel D'Annunzio appoints him president of the local government. Grošić calls the latter a "divine leader". In 1919, the annexation of Rijeka to Italy was announced. Grošić separated from D'Annunzi and became an Italian senator.

After the agreement between Italy and the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes in 1924, he symbolically handed over the keys to the city of Rijeka to the Italian king Viktor Emanuel III. thus it formally comes under Italian rule.
