About the discovery of iodine
Grošić's discovery saved millions of people.
Antun Grošić was born in the village of Draguć near Pazin. Although he was born into a Croatian family, he has always considered himself Italian. He attended high school in Koper, and completed his medical studies in Vienna. At first he got a job as a doctor in Kastav. After a few years, he decides to go to Vienna to specialize in surgery and obstetrics.
After completing his specialization, he became the head of the surgical-gynecological department of the City Hospital in Rijeka. There, he researches the possibility of using iodine as a sterilizing agent in surgery. A scientific paper also writes about this, and the effectiveness of the method is proven by bacteriological tests. Grošić's method for preoperative sterilization was presented at the 16th international congress in Budapest in 1909 and was soon accepted worldwide.
